Here is my version of the Golden Demon. This was my steelhead tying mentor’s (Al Brunell) favorite fly. Al owned a flyshop in Gold Beach Oregon called Al’s Golden Demon Fly Den. Al was instrumental in my steelhead fly tying.

19 Apr 2025Very nice fly. I knew Al through Jerry James of Grants Pass, Oregon. Jerry was somewhat of a mentor to me. He and Al were very close friend. I can see their connection living on in this fly. Have you ever tried pine squirrel for the wing? I believe most of Jerry’s Golden Demons were tied with pine squirrel tail. I think that red squirrel tail works very well too.
