Joe Howell is a well known steelhead tyer on the Umpqua River. He owned a flyshop called The Blue Heron. I was fortunate to meet him and visit his flyshop a couple years ago before it closed.
Below is a fly he tied called Howell’s Orange Heron.

7 Aug 2018I met Joe Howell sometime around 1996-7 while staying with a friend / co-worker of my now late father in Roseburg, OR. I was fishing the North Umpqua ( I’m from California ), and HAD to stop in to meet him after reading about him for years. He was a very kind, and gracious man. Just being in his presence and having him show me flies he tied was a blessing !
BTW, ” Steamboat ” shall forever remain in my mind, like ” A river runs through it ” . . .
