Realistic Woven Stonefly

Material List

Hook:	Dai-Riki #700B size 6
Underbody:	Lead – size .25, covered with thin poly yarn
Body:	Embroidery Floss – Black/Gold on top and Gold/Mixed colors on bottom
Tail:	Ringneck Pheasant body feathers – stripped and colored
Antennae:	Porcupine Guard Hair
Wing Buds:	Water proof paper – printed with stonefly wing buds
Legs:	Japanese Nymph Legs and Porcupine quills
Gills:	Grey Ostrich feather
Other:	Also used some sparkle finger nail polish to add flash.  Used Edding Pens to add color.

Step 1

Tie two piece of lead to each side of the hook.  Flatten the lead lightly with a pair of pliers.  Apply fingernail polish or head cement to the body.  Let dry.

Step 2

Take the darker of the two piece of embroidery floss and tie alongside the lead closest to you.  This will add a little thickness to the body. Take the lighter color embroidery floss and tie it on the far side of the hook.  (Note: the floss that I used came in single strands and I used 4 strands of each color).

 

Step 3

Take two ringneck pheasant feathers from the body and strip the feather off of the feather.  Take a pen and color the stems of the feather a light color.  For this fly I used yellow.  It is easier to apply a base color on the stem before it is tied in.  Take one of the stems and tie it alongside the hook that is facing you.  Take the other one and tie on the opposite site.  There is a natural curve to the feather and the curve should be pointing inward.

 

Step 4

Take a thin piece of poly yarn and wrap it on the body.  This creates a smooth surface to do the woven body.  Take a pen and color the top of the yarn and around the base of the feather stem.  Tie off your thread and adjust the fly so the eye of the hook is facing you.

 

Step 5

Doing an overhand weave take the two pieces of embroidery floss and do 3 or 4 weaves behind the feathers.  Continue on the body until the hook curves slightly downward.  If you haven’t done the overhand weave before – you take the darker color and make a loop with it on one-side of the hook and let the end over the other side of the hook.  Take the lighter color and put it over the darker color, under the hook and then up through the loop.  When you tighten the knot, pull slightly upward and out.  Try to be consistent in the direction you pull each time.
